- What's π or pi?
Pi is a mathematical constant that is the ratio of a circle's circumference to its diameter. The number π appears in many formulae across mathematics and physics. It is an irrational number, meaning that it cannot be expressed exactly as a ratio of two integers. Consequently, its decimal representation never ends, nor enters a permanently repeating pattern.
- What's the Leibniz Formula for π?
The Leibniz formula for π, named after Gottfried Leibniz, was first discovered by the Indian mathematician Madhava of Sangamagrama or his followers in the 14th–15th century and was later independently rediscovered by James Gregory in 1671 and Leibniz in 1673. It states:
π/4 = 1 - 1/3 + 1/5 - 1/7 + 1/9 - 1/11 + 1/13 - ...
